The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
